Wayra Germany class of 2013 announced – nine young startups off to Munich2012-08-28 1
Telco giant Telefónica announced the first intake for its new Wayra Germany startup academy last week at Campus Party Europe in Berlin, after a three-day selection process.
The programme offers six-months of office space, coaching and contacts, starting in September in Munich, plus €50,000 in seed financing and the opportunity to pitch to venture capitalists. In exchange, Wayra takes an undisclosed but “small” equity stake.
The winners, announced on stage by Telefónica Europe CEO José María Álvarez-Pallete and EU Commissioner Neelie Kroes, are:
- Chuisy – social app for sharing decision-making
- myNudge – M2M solution for observing and evaluating the fulfillment of personal goals
- Fabbeo – online marketplace for 3D print services
- Kisibox – transforms your smartphone into a house key
- Cleverlize – cloud application for creating and sending out e-learning lesson units for smartphones
- Pockets United – service for groups of friends to record and share their everyday costs
- ClearKarma – smartphone app showing ingredients in food items
- SpotFav – real-time weather forecasts using HD webcams, meteorological stations and the wisdom of the crowd
- iFrontdesk – modular application for tablets that hotels can use to offer their guests personal concierge services
Out of the nine winners, four – Chuisy, myNudge, Cleverlize and Pockets United – are already from Munich. The others, including ClearKarma from Vienna and Berlin’s Fabbeo, will need to make at least a part-time move to Germany’s less-known startup hub, which remains a stronghold for digital media and telecommunications companies.
“I have never been in an audience with so many talented people,” Kroes said following the announcement. “It is impressive how non-selfish most of you are.” She asked the gathered geeks to keep social problems in mind. “Is there anyone here who can build a robot to help severely handicapped people?”
#I4DA – four winning ideas to solve social problems
Continuing on that theme, four of the winners of the #I4DA “Big Think” competition were also introduced on stage on Friday (pictured above).
- Jonathan Lavigne, 32 – develop a six-month Erasmus programme dedicated to startups and entrepreneurship
- Luis Garcia, 26 – build a European social network, Hipokrum, for people suffering rare diseases
- Daniel Duffy, 21 – integrate an app into browsers to search terms and conditions for threats to privacy, and summarise them for the user
- Carlos Villaumbrosia, 27 – Floqq, an open marketplace for lifelong learning, where everyone can create and join any online or offline course
The #I4DA competition asked would-be “campuseros” to tweet in ideas to solve global problems in exchange for a free Campus Party Europe ticket. Submitted ideas will be compiled and forwarded for inclusion in the European Commission’s Digital Agenda.
